{Workout} Geocaching

Do you know geocaching? I know I know, I’m a bit late to the party 😉 But maybe some of you don’t know it yet? Geocaching is kind of a scavenger hunt with GPS – one searches for things or at least a log book with the help of a GPS device (e.g. a smartphone). Mostly these so called caches are placed on interesting locations, which you wouldn’t recognize or come to otherwise.

Warum Geocaching? / Why Geocaching?

Ideally you walk to the caches (or even run, although you can go to many of them by car too), so you workout in fresh air. And you visit places where you’ve never been before, or see those differently where you are often – its a treasure hunt! Around my corner theres an old bread factory which I never recognized before. And a beautiful statue and an old memorial tablet, both with their own story. That’s what I like most about it: you walk around thoughtfully!

Caching also satisfies collectors passion – you log found caches online and see at one place how many you’ve got. In our group its already a bit of a friendly competition, who has found more. I started because I was thinking it would be fun for my little boy Oliver in the future. Now he’s still too young, but I already love it!

Was braucht man zum Geocaching? / What do you need for Geocaching?

Not much! Only a device capable of GPS, a smartphone was all I needed until now. Depending on location and weather good shoes and adjusted clothes can be a good idea.

I have an app on my smartphone, from Geocaching.com. Thats also where I’m registered online and find my caches-coordinates.

Wo gibt es Geocaches? / Where are Geocaches located?

Everywhere!! Really, I was so surprised, regardless where I search I find a cache! Even in the neighborhood of my parents in law, where not even 100 people live. There’s an old lime kiln which is definitely worth a visit. Of course there are more caches in big cities, but you can also find them during hikes in the woods, hidden creatively. There are caches all over the world. Oh and there are not only normal log books but also boxes with little treasures that you can swap, quiz caches and much more.

Wer versteckt Geocaches? / Who hides caches?

Everyone can hide geocaches. We have a gorgeous tree in our neighbourhood, very large with a big crown, maybe I’ll hide one there in the future. There are some great caches, some are really small, some magnetic, some large, lately we even found a log book in a snail house!

Wie fange ich an? / How do I start?

Just register at one of the platforms online (just google it) and search for a cache near you. Download an app to your smartphone and just search for your first cache during your next walk around the block.
